4th Graders Win Bicycles for READING!

A Celebration is in order for two 4th grade students: Terrell Haynes and David Beckless!

Ms. Brooks hosted a reading contest for the 4th graders to read the novel, “Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky”  by author Kwame Mbalia , donated by Pastor Neal of Glorious Light Church and founder of Leading with Literacy.    The students were to write a report about how the main character influenced their lives.   The winners received bicycles from the Leading with Literacy Program!!   I remember our initial reaction after seeing the novel that was donated to each 4th grade students.  We thought the Lexile level may be too difficult for them to access.  BUT THEY PROVED US WRONG!  FANTASTIC JOB!

The 4th graders received bicycle helmets!  What an exciting reward for reading!!  Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky is a middle school novel, focused on African-American folktale and West African mythology!  The story follows teenager Tristian Strong and his experiences dealing with and overcoming grief, loss and anxiety.
