okay we are recording thank you you're on mute Norma did you want to open up with comments or the pack a good evening and a good evening Miss Powell or joining us and I'm happy that this information reach other parent leaders of your recording we are very happy to be here my name is Norma Sullivan on the title one district manager and it will allow Jacksonville on yourself good evening my name is a Doctor Gloria Mullins and I am your first line of contact when it comes to pack related questions and concerns. I am your face specialist wonderful Network 13 and we are here this evening because we find ourselves as a district almost though it's at this time around March April where many of our schools have not spent their Title 1 funds and in an effort to do something different and to support some of our schools directly maybe learn something directly from our parent leaders from our administrators we decided to do a little bit of a presentation for you as well as pick your brains and so after watching this recording you would like us to come back and we can have a little bit further discussion about how to use your title 1 funds we're happy to do that so I am going to hand it back over to dr. Mullins to start us off and then we will allow for questions at the end and do a little bit of Exploration with principal Salter and misspell okay well thank you so much Norma as I I'm sharing my screen I'm going to leave it up to you to monitor that chat box and then when we switch over just let me know to go to the next slide okay so title what is allowable what can you thin your funds on okay that's what the purpose of the presentation will focus on and so before we die I'm in I'm will you think about Title 1 how does spending Title 1 funds make you feel are you in there are you excited are you let us know how does Title 1 spending funds make you feel so you can go ahead and utilized the chat box so on a scale from 0 to 10 how confident do you feel about finding Title 1 funds how when and on one and on what so with zero being not feeling too confident and with 10 just feeling yes we have this we know what we need to do we are aware of the needs of the school in the chat box if you can let us know 0210 are you feeling confident or not confident you want to unmute you can do that as well or just utilize the chat box we have a 7 at the moment. Okay we have been given the green light to take off on arbrey flight this evening so a 7 is great for you feeling confident about spending those Title 1 funds okay so when we think about Title 1 funds and knowing that there are some parameters in which we have to realize these funds let's talk about the allowable filters okay do Title 1 funds they come conditions okay so any time the government is giving a grant or in this case the title 1 funds there are some conditions and so we're going to talk about those conditions R3 the funds have to be spent on reasonable and necessary items the funds have to be utilized for youth only okay and then the DVD activity the products of service and have to be connected directly to the classroom right that's academic achievement of the students in the chapel quick quiz how many ways can the title $1 be spent when you think about the allowable filters the one two or three how many different ways how many three how many I just gave you the answer how many conditions are there when we think about ways you can spend these Title 1 funds and me and Mom knew the real quick I'm a size 3 absolutely it so we are going to let us go further into what it means right so the first one when we say reasonable and necessary the cost and use of the activity is real okay and then the activity or product is necessary it's reasonable and it's necessary the second filter the second condition is for parents use only we love our children of our community members however the second condition these funds have to be used for parents use only and so the funds must only be for used by to develop their skills your skills to assist your child your students with learning okay the funds cannot be for student teachers at Dennis traitors or Community okay and then the last condition is we have to have a connection to the classroom okay so Title 1 funds are all meant to text student academic achievement so any fun must use any funds that you use my tab at in mine okay so parent engagement fun must be used to increase parents kill that the learning or to become involved in school so on the next few slides we're going to go into specific example of a reasonable and necessary for parents only a connected to the classroom with just the recap these are the three condition in which the title 1 funds have to be utilized so we're going to practice okay so go ahead and get ready for a lot of times when you think about spending there may be some frustration around spending but we want to practice and then we want to look at two other major reason where you know you can get creative and if you spend time up front before you spend the money and so how you want to do that is you want to think about okay what are the do and then what are the needs of the school is it's just like if you're going to the grocery store you have a grocery list you may have a budget what it what do you need okay there's things that you need everything we all want but weep for the sake of this exercise we want to practice and we want to keep in mind what the Jews and don'ts are and then what are the needs of the school okay and so before we you know talk about okay what do I spend my funds on we want to first ask a very important question okay what do parents and students need this year okay. What I want to say my phone's on but what do parents and students need this year so we're going to let that thinking I'm going to pause are there any question any of the items covered so far no the death of Mullins I'm going to say that I love your analogy about going to the grocery store because we are all hungry we are all hungry and and if you know date Wonder can we eat we have lunch with breakfast lunch and dinner and then another day starts for the same thing a new year start and we are hungry for support we are hungry for the information but that doesn't mean that we are going to feed ourselves whatever whatever is put in front of us so you have to think about you know who I am what is it that I need so if I'm a diabetic I'm going to not going to go out and go to the grocery store and spend and donuts chocolate and candy ultimately that is not going to fit fill my ultimate need which is to be healthy and Thrive and treat my body well so thank you for that analogy absolutely and I'm going to hand it over to you to get into the next part of the presentation so when we're thinking about the areas of need because we we always want to jump immediately to okay how can we Phyllis or I heard of a great Workshop what is it really what is the most important thing for you so we wanted to start by reminding you that there are generally three areas that you want to focus on it is the academic area it is this social emotional area and then it is the pack functioning area those are the three general areas where you want to focus on the things that you could do with your title 1 funds so when we're talking about academics it is what do parents do this not about the students remember this is about increasing the skills of the parents so what is it that the parents need to learn about academics and we put here for each of those three categories we put five examples of five potential needs they're the school I am sure has for each area probably has 20 m 30 needs AR-15 needs so you are just seeing a partial list the storm examples for example for egg that makes is that there are and I'm trying to read it from here but there could be that the kids are not on level in reading or math because of distance learning it could be that there are new reading or math practices that are being introduced in parents need to know about those so they can support them at home it could be that they need at home studying strategies you know the kids have been away from the classroom for a number of years and maybe they need to and parents need to learn how to guide them it could be executive functioning skills which is really about organizing yourself and planning and strategizing and our brains have not been in that mode cuz you're at home and it's easy to get distracted and you're not as organized it could be writing skills because maybe parents are not guiding children as well as they could or as well as a teacher could so these five areas are there could be many more academic room so remember we're talking about how to improve academic performance so then we look at those the emotional what kinds of things are happening socially emotion that are standing in the way of learning it could be testing site it probably wasn't pressure at home for kids to take test it could be about difficulty working or collaborating with others again at home you're the only student you're not collaborating with with co-workers there's a thing called self-regulation when kids get frustrated when there are problems you know how do you bring yourself back to the place of calm so that you're thinking rationally and making good decisions so how do you regulate yourself you know it could be some anxiety it could be exact about going back to school or could be anxiety from one grade to another like primary to middle or 8th grade to high school there could be still from stress due to the pandemic you know some families might have had a lot of loss or even the racial unrest climate the stuff that was happening in our world in our society those things are are meaningful especially if you are at the center of some of that social unrest you know there could be some is it bullying some kids acting out and not knowing how to return back to school and they may be picking on other students I mean there's all kinds of dynamic so these are again some of the areas could be depression could be suicide me there's so many more other areas it may be standing in the way the money can also use for the pack functioning thanks so if you have a parent room maybe you're returning to in-person meeting money can be used to furnish a room I'm if you're lacking equipment you know we need a copier or we really need a projector we discovered that we can use presentations and we would really love to have a projector to show the parents it could be meeting material paper clipboard their pens it could also be Refreshments for meetings which we know are crucial if we want parents to come we want them to be comfortable and whether is coffee and cookie or cakes or or fruit or something we want parents to be comfortable to come to meetings and then finally what is that last one doctor Melendez it is language need so sometimes you will experience or you have families that have different language needs so some of the funds can be used for the moving forward or going to go. so those are the three areas and so again we want to remind you that each of those areas of need if we can go back to the top one I want to show you that each of those areas of need one more down I'm sorry I apologize my next flight to do all of this serious remember we identified each of those we identified five areas of need each area of need those little white boxes that you see underneath those are five possible things that you can do with each of those needs so for example if you are talking about the new math for example you know there could be of many ways right now week we listed one two three four seven things that you could do but if you have a parent or a loss you can use the money to pay teachers to teach you about what's going on in the classroom you could use the money to order materials on math or reading so that each of the area of needs has many possibilities of how you can address that need okay next why don't we want to tell you that we are going to be focusing we're going to give you some examples and we're going to focus on two areas so if you can zoom out that way they can see that we black and out of those areas talk little bit about the stress due to pandemic and or racial climate and we're going to focus on language and he's just as example so again we want to remind you that those two areas do the panda Macon or social unrest and language needs can have multiple ways to address those things and so we're going to give you examples about how to spend that money so next so again we are going to be focusing just on three of those multiple areas okay so in regards to that area on stress related to the pandemic okay so you come to meetings and somebody says hey we should do yoga classes for parents there about 200 $50 a session and we should do it a session for 10 weeks and that somebody who knows how to do it you know let's let's consider that so one you have to remember remember those three filters reasonably necessary is the only and directly connected to the classroom you have to be able to answer yes to all three in order for something to be allowable so when you think about weekly yoga classes for parents first of all is it reasonable in what's the theory not really because we're thinking about let's let's take you as an example I think that you have maybe about $2,200 for parents I can't remember right now off the top I had what that is I only have 750 okay and I had Alvin I don't I don't even have that originally had 2077 I just looked it up okay but let's say that you haven't spent any of that money and you have $2,077 to spend is it reasonable and necessary well no not really because if you think 250 10 that's about 2,500 it's a neat up your whole amount just on yoga classes for parents okay is it necessary is it for parent you so only yes that is connected to the classroom no not really because if you taking time or classes to chill out the parents how is that going to improve academic performance and so remember it has to have a direct impact to academic before okay let's go to the next example so then somebody says you know what let I really know somebody that can do anxiety-reducing techniques to enhance learning and they do it by showing us some yoga breathing it's about $300 this person charges 300 procession so is it reasonable and necessary I would say yes you know it is a reasonable rate is usually between 150 and 400 based on some of the vendors that we have used is it for parent usonia is it connected to the classroom yet because you're teaching parents yoga breathing so that they can teach them to their their students because of that they can make a connection the presenter makes a connection about why reducing anxiety Austin learn better put their brain more in a in a ready position to really absorb information when they are relaxed third one he says you don't want to just heard of this awesome conference at the three-day conference it's only $100 per person it's in Phoenix Arizona we have wonderful presenters you know can we use it for that day is it real cannibal unnecessary well yes and no while it's only $100 a person which is a wonderful deal for a conference especially if its 3 Day guess what when you talk about traveling to Arizona when you talk about lodging needs it's going to end up much more than $100 per person is it for parents absolutely is it directly connecting to a classroom yes it is the sounds like a marvelous idea okay and it's all reducing that those that problem next through this so then the other thing that we want you to know is that we are here to troubleshoot with you if there's something that just sounds absolutely magnificent give dr. Mullins to call she can also bring me in and we can chat you know how can we make this work for you the what kind of ideas do you think how can we make this particular conference work for you any ideas with Paul or ansible softer well if he was my reason I just walked in the door a little liquor if you welcome it's okay imma be honest with myself and salsa and the few pounds that we did have we every thing possible I myself have a very great rapport with parents and I'm just not understanding what it is where it is I may be going what it is where I'm not engaging them enough you know of course he thought food will work but they would eat get the itis as we call it and they don't hear the things that's necessary Siri to be heard as far as their student academic what it is that we can do to help them help their student and for the most part especially now we really want to yeah I'm with you and you know what Miss call you are not alone this song of I can't reach the parents and I can't engage them is a district-level song I mean this is that everybody is confronting and yes we can blame it on the pandemic we can blame it on the fact that parents are tired and exhausted but I think it's deeper than that I think it is there Zacks research on Miss Powell that says that there are two main reasons why parents don't get involved in school and this may not be the case for everybody but this is what researchers people have really study this question why are parents engaged I found out people usually say it's working people are tired people people are overextended and there's all kinds of reasons but they're really narrows it down to two when parents feel invisible and when parents do now I feel part of a community and so if if an end guess what I'm fortunately both of those take time to cultivate and take time to build a relationship and so we will usually offer little tip and you're probably doing many of those already but it's little things like saying oh welcome mrs. Belcher you know I really like the way you did your hair this month it's really looking good or how I really love your the way that you you participated so it is about noticing people so that they don't feel out of place and then Community give them time so that they can feel part of the community and feel like they are part of doing something so it could be like you know Miss Paula heard that that you are awesome and you know you have this wonderful peach cobbler or I heard that you have excellent organizational skills can you come and help us set up our meeting before it's sometimes giving people tasks to do kind of it doesn't force them but it feels like I'm needed somewhere else and of course you know there are different things that you can do to engage people and play it takes time because if I noticed is a psalter this month and then you're going to be so you have to make sure that you noticed this is Alter moving forward to and so it wasn't a one-time not authentic I think it's about paying attention and unfortunately can't do it by yourself and also that this is why you have for leaders and then for will cultivate for more and then you have a people that you trained to watch out to make sure that people feel included and so I don't have any magic Solutions but this is part of the problem in this is what experts are telling us that people who get involved is because they feel needed and because they feel like they are part of something bigger they're part of this community called Pullman that is you know it is something that is bigger than than they are and they aren't I think also what I have to do a better job I think about how I involved I need to involve the student so here is what the delay issue was that the tack did attempt to involve the students right because it would this is a known fact that when you involve students the parents will come right when you involve students and parents will come it's just that I need help getting that involvement and that messaging right there so many heating parts what is that I have I need support with that so it is important to get students to the table even if it's for example this one was about the violence you know I'm having the students are there perspective on gun violence I needed help getting them there I mean it in and you think what I thought Uncle Stones her why don't you just go do that like you just why don't you do it you're in the building you're doing it's just so many other competing priorities for me right and the other pieces like I do because it takes a whole like a plan or program it's a lot involved with planning a program you know I think I do need to do a better job of having who who who are my hands on deck that can help with that so the same I was saying to miss Pole MP just one parent leader there has to be a whole team and maybe you build up that engagement over 2 years or maybe over 3 years but you have a plan you know you could bring in your teachers and you say you know mrs. Mullins. Can you tell us from your third grade give me the name of two parents will you feel a really involved and then you have Miss Mullins call her parents and say you know what Miss. I would really love to recommend you for this I think that you would be magnificent you know and so you have the teachers than actively recognizing and it shouldn't like I said it shouldn't be faulted should be like who do you think that can the difference and then you bring in so if we're talking about I don't know if you're talkin about high school than you have you identify a couple of parents for class you're talking about grammar school imagine to parents purpur grave at 6 even if you work with half of them that's still a solid eight parents that are going to be involved and then those a parent's you ask them to help you cultivate one more and then you have a solid group of 16 and even if it only sixteen you know you can move forward strongly with those 16 and so sometimes it's about a plan and you know and we can come and help you try this out give you some ideas maybe we can do a pilot we can't do the with all of the schools but we can probably choose one or two schools and if this is something that you I don't know how long you are going to be there miss Paul but maybe we can work with some of the parent leaders and try to in the shouldn't be that I mean this is why have the Pack this should not be the only the principal's job this principle has a hundred other things to do in when I say 100 and probably under estimating that so this is Aunt in there there's Beauty I'm reaching out to your peer you know from parent to parent and so we can we can help provide and give you guys some workshops or something around that we don't need to continue through the rest of this presentation because this talks about the gym things that you can do and this gives you like different examples for four different things will will send you the the the presentation but I think a lot of line is that there is a lot of things that you can do sometimes we get caught up on the things we can't do instead of focusing on the two hundred other things that you could do with the funds and I love that Miss Powell brought us back to okay well okay great we're going to choose what to do with how do we get the parents there to take advantage of these things yeah I work typically with first grade and I was speaking to miss wood about Mother's Day the thing would be roses Mimosa which will be orange juice and probably like some sparkling grape juice and roses and we take a picture but because support pick up is coming up I asked her today how powerful will it be for her to you know notify the parents of Mother's Day that we will have for them like when they come up to the school whenever they come they can take a picture with their child have a glass of orange juice and typically talk about the needs of their child okay and because report card pick up is coming up I was asking her to send out an email to notify them about Mother's Day so if we can do a small survey or questionnaire as we always typically do what would they like to do for Mother's Day with their child that morning particularly maybe an hour before they leave school at spa visiting the classroom really quickly say hello to your child take a picture with the teacher and the child with your rolls let me say that it's a beautiful idea it was also recommended and I forget the the terminology that was you there was something else and involved family you know why because everybody doesn't have a mother and something else that was bad and I forgot what it was and I thought it was something about parents punch with parents or something it would punch family something it was something that was an all-encompassing you know because we do have to be careful with you know because if we do donuts with Dad and my dad is in here we did do something that involved families right but then there's this whole rest for that my my person won't come you know what if my person didn't come and not to say that we wouldn't do it but I love the idea and let's keep talking about it the kind of love to keep talking about it because here Luke's back to the past original idea of involving students applaud their parents or there's some information that the child can give their parents what their person you know you know what the child is going to say something at Fermi and then I take one up or not the teacher thing something affirmative parents because we are parents are afraid of wondering when the when is it going to drop okay here you are in a feet of judgment you bout to judge me you bout to judge me and so if if we can then say some positive things about the parents you know I have an idea though I like Miss Powell's idea because she is talking about highlighting a parent and that's important so if you work around some of those ideas I think you are on to some I love the idea of like during report-card pickup you can have a captive audience right there somebody can have take picture I'm with a phone or something and then this could be a way to get yourself a mailing was two people who would be willing to and so it could be learning champion and you can maybe create poster like a background for like four pictures and maybe you can have like pictures in the room and you know stop by the pack room you know that or stop by the pack table and if you have the backdrop in the back when it gets paid Champions like who is your learning Champion so maybe my older sister and so you take a picture and you ask may we take your your email information would you like to receive information about pack you send me the picture of the child and that learning champion and then you start sending information to that list of people who sign up and then that is when you can start noticing people the idea miss Mama because I'm always taking pictures about your spring break if they're participating in the classroom if there was a small event in the hall or anything involve the students I typically will take pictures of them and the idea that can that can be third party taking pictures I would probably have somebody on staff to take the picture that way the school can handle the distribution so that you don't get into you know somebody else has a child's picture or whatever and I would also I would develop a one pager this is who we are me to pack these are our and these are some tips you can do that way maybe if you don't call it mimosas maybe you call it whatever you I call it you have a refreshment there for people who stop by for you or or cookie or something good to make for 4 minutes you can go online and just come up with one pager you know here are tips of what you can do as a as a learning Champion you know to support your child and that way you give them a handout it becomes academic it start to the classroom you take your picture you may be able to collect the mailing mailing a distribution list because you're going to ask him for permission can can we continue to send you information and you also start awareness of the pack you know and you can maybe ask are you are you willing to come to Future meetings or for future workshops I'm stupid like that I'm going to share my screen this is what I shared with let me see I actually shared this with parents and I I got for responses but it was less time to discuss your Pullman Cardinal success so it was like a survey that I really ask parents for report card pick up day what works for them to engage you know student so I have don't give me their email their name what time will the available so are they available in the morning at 10 to noon the middle of the day or the evening like 5 to 6 and then select the top interested in understanding School data understand a personalized learning strategies to help their child succeed in school Food Services what is my child being served in the cafeteria and how to access the CPS Airporter to check their child's grade because the thought my thought is thinking to try to engage them at at multiple times so who you know maybe you can come and tend to know before report card, maybe we always have that 32 for  block and so I won't turn your way but you can come on in and do this before you before things open up at 4 and then in the evening 5 to 6 and I would have multiple staff members available to sort of rotate like me and my AP the lunchroom people my personalized learning coach you know and or my technology person and we can be in different areas what parents can receive it you know receive support I tried it before the pandemic you know but I think that there's something about my marketing and maybe you know now that I I'm looking back at it maybe it's too maybe it's too hot left maybe it's my mother used to tell me this year is her. I'm sorry my mother used to tell me when it comes to fundamentals of reading things big print giveth and little print take it away as you always say I miss also the pain don't read so the way that you format things the way that you do your surveys and questionnaires to me is perfectly fine the thing that we need to do a figure out is how can we get them to read them all to understand it all informing them to be aware but we need some type of entertainment in that you don't I think it's a video like I was thinking about a video like I mean like for example you know have a video literally of me looking at an empty Auditorium and then like where are you why are you're here because you need something more you know what like to you know Norma said I don't feel seen you know I've not been I'm not involved and so how to change it around with the video and video, showing you know you know maybe even interviewing a couple parents like love it and just say we need you you know something about that help funny commercial almost has to be funny and nobody's there you know and tick tick tick tick tick and then you look at the East and the auditorium and nobody's there you know in any something funny that people can you know and every hour may be the next the next time I'm on the floor my legs on the wall and looking at my wife or something funny you know too kind do parents to kind of get a chuckle because it's like then they'll be like okay we need to go you know something something to get them involved you know I love it I think that this is God's a great idea and you can even like you know everybody every group has a wannabe actor or actress and so I bet you that you can get three or four parents to really participate there's the show iPhones but I bet you anything you can find a couple of people to do that the other suggestion I was going to have is if you have that pack table you can have a principal Salter maybe if you have an iPad or two that you can borrow you can have people filling out the the the survey for you and maybe all parents that fill out the survey will be entered in a raffle and it could be something you know small it could be I don't know if pulman t-shirt or something you know whoever built this out and you know will be entered for a raffle so you don't have to give everybody something but but and this is another way of collecting that survey that's another thing I can do and I love the idea of the commercial you know why not appointment Tik Tok I don't care this is not kids anymore everybody's on Tic Tac and you know why it works cuz it's 30 seconds 30 to a minute and you can pack a lot into 60 minutes and you can have some of this thing you know I get involved because of this or when I was little I this was important I don't know about using students for that but you know there are so many things that you can pack in 30 seconds parents can't say I'm not they can't tell you that they're not too busy for 30 seconds that is true and I've picked up something from Tik Tok my stuff that I do with the first grade students in the morning and while the student was eating breakfast there. what they call morning daily routine or what have you I always think good morning to them and they repeat after me I say good morning good morning I have someone individually and I think it's going so every week I would choose a different song like tomorrow it'll be Mister Rogers Neighborhood because a lot of the student have not heard of Fred Rogers you know and I said I was playing around neighborhood to them in the morning while they're eating their breakfast that's up to Salter there's all kinds of things that can be done that's good to to even make a video of student you know Norma you made it yourself Norma sorry if you if you are doing videos that are teaching parents to how to get engaged in school guess what that the title one event that the title one activity sounds great and maybe you can eat and entice the parents to come in and we'll have breakfast for you you know for we're going to be recording a 30-second videos and have all the parents to show up record at least one thing and you can have a workshop or it like what is the what's the most important message to your child you know and I mean whatever the question is you know what was school like for you and one sentence and then you can have the whole Workshop revolve around that and then in the end you have a compilation of you could even do somebody with the same phone and going from one parent to another parent to another. And you don't have to even have it for Eddie and you know you have any statements of why it's important to be involved and then you have your featuring 20 parents yeah I love it I unfortunately have to leave in 2 minutes but I hope that this has been helpful this brainstorming time dr. Mullins and I are happy to come back at any time to help you do this it whatever you decide to do let us know we'd love to drop by and and check it out and it was great I thank you for the I love the actual video I mean presentation that you shared I think that's so helpful for us you know actually because it did amplifies it you know there's so many documents to read and go through and this just pretty much nails and allow me to very clearly and succinctly share because I think I was so excited to have them involved you know and if they weren't clear on what that meant you know and what the what the money part of it meant and they had Grande and I and I said it multiple times I will continue to say that they were great idea but like you clearly said it needs to fit within the parameters of how you use out of 10 ideas good I just needed to do a better job of explaining that why it wasn't going to fit you know why you know for example but was it reasonable and necessary repair only if the connected directly to academic achievement but have to be conveyed I am going to send a link to the presentation with problem may I add you to the list yes ma'am and your first line of questioning should be dr.
